How to install a new window

Window RepairRemoving the window casing and jamb

First, you’ll need to use a pry bar to remove the window casing and mullion extension around the old window. The jamb extension is just a piece of wood that has been pulled down and attached to the window jamb to bring it in line with the wall.

Remove the old window/guide rail

Unscrew the window from the jamb and remove it. Be careful not to break the glass when removing it. Many windows consist of multiple sashes with movable tracks on the side. With these types of windows, it may be easier to remove one sash at a time.

Preparing/repairing the new window opening

Once the window is removed from the wall, check the condition of the window reveal to make sure there is no structural damage. It is not uncommon for an old window to leak and for the jamb to rot. If there is damage, you will need to replace or repair the damaged areas of the jamb before moving forward. You’ll also need to measure your rough opening to make sure the new window will fit there.

Check/replace the window stop

The window stop is a piece of wood that is placed around the outside of the window reveal. The function of the stop is to keep the window from sliding out of the opening. It literally prevents the window from moving. It is very likely that the original stop is still in usable condition, but if it is damaged, you may need to repair or replace it as well.

Dry fit the window

Before you apply the silicone to the window stop, you should dry fit the window to make sure there are no problems with the fit. If you have any problems with the fit, fix them now and then dry fit the window again. If you did it right, the window should fit snugly into the opening. Do not proceed with the installation until you are satisfied with the fit of the window in the opening.

Installing the window

The actual installation of the window is very simple. First, spread a bead of silicone on the inside edge of the window stop and then slide the window into place. Place a level across the top of the window and press cedar shims between the bottom of the window frame and the jamb to fit the window level. The window usually comes with its own hardware package, which usually consists of four screws that go through the sides of the unit to anchor it to the reveal. Two screws should be inserted into each side of the window, one near the top and the other near the bottom. There are pre-drilled holes in the window frame for the screws.
